Basket Bags That Are Not Only For The Beach

Basket bags are this summer’s must-have accessory! Push away those initial thoughts that this bag is made for the beach and check out the latest basket bag styles that have been seen accompanied by many celebrities for all different occasions.

In the 1950s the straw tote was seen as a stylish item associated with luxurious travel, sold in holiday destinations as a chic souvenir store. Audrey Hepburn often carried a picnic-style basket bag. As well as Audrey, Jane Birkin, an English actress, became known for her basket bag in the 1970s.

It wasn’t until years later in 1983 that Hermès came out with the Birkin bag—named after Jane.

As we hit 2018, if you explore the more high-end fashion styles, you may encounter a hefty price tag to match. Mark Cross’s structured wicker bags have leather frames and gold-plated brass hardware and cost around £1,700, while Gucci’s striped raffia beach tote costs £875.

The global fashion search engine Lyst has reported that searches including the terms “straw,” “raffia,” and “wicker” are up 56 percent as we all seek to buy into the trend.

Despite the gorgeous basic style bags inspired by Audrey and Jane, this year the most popular brands are the most imaginative. Cult Gaia, whose cage-like bamboo bags have been seen in Jessica Alba and other celebs’ hands, ar every popular.

Ulla Johnson’s lantern-like Tautou design is currently the most viewed straw bag on Lyst. It is rendered in wicker and features a top handle and shoulder strap. Celebrities have been snapped rocking this cute bag, including Emma Roberts.

If you spent a bit too much on your vacations this summer, then there are some high-street alternatives which won’t break the bank. Mango sells a simple basket bag, similar to that of Dorothy’s picnic bag from the Wizard of Oz, for an affordable $39.99.

If you are loving the woven look but need something for the evening, you can find a crossover bag made from woven rattan with a bamboo handle from Zara at $49.90.
